Early History and Establishment: La Babia, originally named La Bavia, was first noted in 1773. Spanish Royal Army leader Lt. Colonel Hugo O’Conor prioritized the location for the establishment of a presidio that would fortify their hold on the region, which offered an abundant water supply and lush natural surroundings. The new presidio was named after the sitting Viceroy of the region, El Real Presidio de San Antonio Bucareli de la Bavia (a.k.a. La Babia).
Cultural and Social Impact: La Babia has not only been significant for its ranching operations but also as a cultural landmark. The region’s rich history is intertwined with the broader history of Northern Mexico, characterized by its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural traditions and historical events.
Today: La Babia stands as a testament to the resilient spirit of ranching, reflecting a history of exploration, settlement, and cultural integration. It remains a cherished sanctuary for its current caretakers, who continue to honor its legacy and historical significance.
La Babia is a pioneering cattle company stretching from Northern Mexico to South Texas. Our past is historic, but the future of vertically integrated ranch-to-table transparent beef supply is promising, as it addresses consumer demands for quality, traceability and sustainability. By controlling every stage of production, from raising cattle to processing and distribution, ranchers can ensure higher standards of animal welfare and environmental stewardship. This transparency fosters trust and allows consumers to make informed choices about their food. Additionally, such integration can lead to promoting a more sustainable and ethical beef industry.
Our cattle operations, with a footprint in Northern Mexico and South Texas, focuses on humanely raising premium cattle and honoring our century-old vaquero culture.
Our South Texas feed yard provides our customers, as well as our own cattle, with the highest quality of care. This ensures the highest return on cattle and the best quality to your supply chain.
The future of our cattle industry is being traceable from pasture to plate through a transparent supply chain that champions the land, cattle, and the environment where we live and work.
We sell direct to restaurants including fine dining establishments and higher-end butcher shops across South Texas.
